Ruan's Story

Ruan is more than just a name to us. He is a husband, a father, a friend, a hardworking man — and someone who is now facing a fight that no family should ever have to face.

Ruan Fourie from Christiana is a 34 year old husband and a father to a 6-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. He works on a farm in the Christiana area and, like any young father, should be spending his days working, raising his children and building a future for his family.

Instead, Ruan and his family are now facing the reality of Stage 4 melanoma (skin cancer).

His doctors have advised that he will need to continue with cancer treatment for the next two years.

One of the most critical parts of that treatment is medication that Ruan needs to take every single day.

That means more than R57,000 every month, simply for the medication he needs to continue his treatment.

Over the expected two-year treatment period, the estimated cost of this medication alone is approximately:

R1,368,000

That is an enormous financial burden for any family — and while Ruan and his family are dealing with the fear, uncertainty and emotional weight of a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis, they are also faced with finding this amount every single month.

There are also additional expenses that come with ongoing cancer treatment, including blood tests, specialist consultations, doctor visits and other medical costs.

When we at Whisper Lab heard about Ruan's journey, we knew we wanted to do something meaningful — something that could bring people together, create hope, and make a difference, one small step at a time.

The Next Six Months

In approximately six months, Ruan's doctors will perform another scan to see how his body is responding to his treatment and medication. This will be an important milestone in his journey.

We will keep the Scents of Hope community updated, where possible and appropriate, on Ruan's progress and his journey.

Ruan's children are only 6 and 3 years old. They are still so young.
